Direct Rail Services (DRS) is a freight operating company created by British Nuclear Fuels Limited. Since then it has expanded greatly, and has acquired many more locomotives, most bought second-hand and subsequently refurbished. Ownership of DRS was transferred from BNFL to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority when the NDA was created on 1 April 2005, under the terms of the Energy Act 2004. Privatisation of British Rail - UK Railways - A Wikia wiki (2505 words)
Directive 91/440 did not, of itself, require that the railways be privatised; it was principally an accounting means of ensuring a level playing-field for incumbent train operators and new companies entering the rail transport market.
British Rail was to be broken up into over 100 separate companies, with all relationships between the successor companies controlled by legal contracts and supervised by the Office of the Rail Regulator and, in the case of the passenger railway, the Office of Passenger Rail Franchising (OPRAF).
The privatisation has been widely criticised in terms of service to the passenger, and also on safety grounds in the aftermath of a few high-profile accidents (though the empirical evidence for the view that these could be attributed to the new structure of the industry is weak).
EWS - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography (408 words)
The British Rail Class 66 is a development of the British Rail Class 59.
Some operators use EWS locomotives for hauling passenger services, such as Arriva Trains Wales on the Rhymney Line during peak times during the week and at weekends.
A new company, Euro Cargo Rail, would be formed to market the new services on routes in northern France, such as Calais to Tourcoing, and Calais to Dunkerque.
