Encyclopedia > Direct Stream Digital

Direct-Stream Digital (DSD) is an encoding technology to store audio signals on digital storage media and is used for the super audio compact disc (SACD). The signal is stored as Sigma-Delta modulated digital audio, a sequence of single bit values at a very high frequency sampling rate of 64 time 16 bits or 2.8224 MHz. Noise shaping are used by the 64x oversampled signal to reduce distortion caused by the very high quantization of the audio signal to a single bit. Due to the high sampling rate the bandwidth and therefore the audio quality can be higher than is possible with the 44.1 kHz PCM format used for normal audio CDs. The word encoding has a number of meanings. ... See also: Innovation By the mid 20th century humans had achieved a level of technological mastery sufficient to leave the surface of the planet for the first time and explore space. ... Audio can mean: Sound that can be heard. ... Signaling, or signal, may mean: Look up signal on Wiktionary, the free dictionary. ... A digital system is one that uses numbers, especially binary numbers, for input, processing, transmission, storage, or display, rather than a continuous spectrum of values (an analog system) or non-numeric symbols such as letters or icons. ... The terms storage (U.K.) or memory (U.S.) refer to the parts of a digital computer that retain physical state (data) for some interval of time, possibly even after electrical power to the computer is turned off. ... Super Audio CD (SACD) is a new audio recording format aimed at providing higher fidelity audio reproduction than the compact disc. ... Sine waves of various frequencies; the lower waves have higher frequencies than those above. ... MegaHertz (MHz) is the name given to one million (106) Hertz, a measure of frequency. ... Similar to dither, noise shaping is a bit reduction technique used to minimize quantization error. ... A distortion is the (usually) undesirable alteration of the original shape (or other characteristic) of an object, image, sound, waveform or other form of information or representation. ... Generally, quantization is the state of being constrained to a set of discrete values, rather than varying continuously. ... The sampling frequency or sampling rate defines the number of samples per second taken from a continuous signal to make a discrete signal. ... The hertz (symbol Hz) is the SI unit of frequency. ... Pulse-code modulation (PCM) is a digital representation of an analog signal where the magnitude of the signal is sampled regularly at uniform intervals, then quantized to a series of symbols in a digital (usually binary) code. ... It has been suggested that CD Rot be merged into this article or section. ...

There is much debate over whether DSD or PCM is ultimately the better digital encoding format, as can be seen in the format war between SACD and DVD-Audio. A format war describes competition between competing, and typically mutually incompatible, media formats, usually very costly to the format-owning parties involved. ... The Flaming Lips CD and DVD release of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, one of the first major albums to employ the DVD-Audio format DVD-Audio is a format for delivering high-fidelity audio content on a DVD. It offers many channels (from mono to 5. ...

Practical DSD converter implementations were pioneered by Ed Meitner, an Austrian sound engineer and owner of EMM Labs. Global DSD technology was developed by Sony and Philips, the designers of the audio CD. Philips' DSD tool division was transfered to Sonic Studio, LLC in 2005 for on-going design and development. Sony Corporation (Japanese katakana: ソニー) (TYO: 6758 , NYSE: SNE) is a global Japanese consumer electronics corporation based in Tokyo, Japan. ... Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. (Royal Philips Electronics N.V.), usually known as Philips, (Euronext: PHIA, NYSE: PHG) is one of the largest electronics companies in the world. ...

DSD technology may also have potentional for video applications.

ADA-8XR Direct Stream Digital (DSD) Applications (1401 words)
When the DSD I/O Module is used in conjunction with a PCM digital I/O Module (for example an AES3 I/O Module) it becomes possible to perform direct digital PCM to DSD and DSD to PCM conversion at any of the ADA-8XR supported sample rates.
Path 1 is configured for analogue to DSD conversion, the DSD output appears on the MAC-DSD interface and the Path is synchronized to the MAC-DSD interface.
Path 1 is configured for PCM to DSD conversion using an additional PCM-type digital I/O Module (for example an AES3 I/O Module); the Path is synchronized to the PCM I/O Module input using automatic channel selection and follows the sample rate of the PCM data.
