Encyclopedia > Disco D
At age 27

David Shayman, better known as Disco D, (September 21, 1980 – January 23, 2007) was an American music producer and former teenage DJ prodigy from Ann Arbor, Michigan who helped popularize a style of Detroit electronic music called "Ghettotech". A 2002 graduate of the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, Shayman was a key player in the founding of Ghostly International, having co-produced the pioneering record label's first single, "Hands Up for Detroit" (billed under Matthew Dear and Daisha, another Shayman alias).[1] He later relocated to New York and branched out as a producer of hip hop, R&B, and dancehall tracks for mainstream artists such as AZ ("City of Gods" from A.W.O.L.), 50 Cent ("Ski Mask Way" from The Massacre), Nina Sky ("Turnin' Me On"), Chamillionaire, and more notoriously, Kevin Federline's much-maligned single, the funk carioca-inspired "Popozão." He was found dead on the morning of January 23, 2007, from an apparent suicide.[2] Disco D. had recently been diagnosed as bi-polar and he was also suffering from depression. According to statistics, those who suffer from the illness are 20 times more likely to commit suicide than then general population. Image File history File linksMetadata Disco+d. ... Expect new D artists such as Tierra Thomas, Sara Stokes, Bee, and Kato to be similarly ambitious.
Disco D first achieved notoriety as one of the originators of Ghettotech - an urban hybrid of Detroit techno and electro, Chicago booty house and Miami Bass.
Additionally, D is keeping his empire growing with several new business ventures, including DiscoDVD, a series of self-produced and edited mini documentaries, and DiscoDigital, which could very well prove to be the world's first online-only major label.
disco D (601 words)
At the young age of 18 Disco D has emerged as one of the most in demand DJs and producers for the new genre of electronic dance music known as Ghetto Tech.
Disco D's combination of ghetto and electro tracks have been embraced by both techno and ghetto DJs alike and was described by Toronto’s Tribe Magazine as “different and fresh.” It has also caught the ear of ghetto house innovator DJ FUNK, who featured the title track “D-Down” on his mix CD, “Booty Bounce vol.
Disco D’s second 12” release, entitled “Cannot Stop This,” dropped November of 1998 on the MCM sublabel "Contaminated Muzik." This release covered a wide spectrum of electro, ghetto, and even jungle via a remix courtesy of Chicago drum ‘n bass giants DANNY THE WILDCHILD and PHANTOM 45.
