This article is about the musical genre. For the sport, see Disco Polo (sport).
Disco polo is a musical genre unique and native to Poland, which in its present form exists since the early 1990s. It was derived from contemporary folk tunes (mostly somewhat vulgarised ones played at weddings and feasts) and italo disco. The name itself was conceived by Sławomir Skręta from Blue Star as a replacement for an older term, piosenka chodnikowa ("sidewalk music") - which originated from the main means of distribution of its recordings - sidewalk stands on streets and bazaars. Disco polo could have been heard mostly at feasts, weddings or even as a part of political campaigns during Polish government elections. Bright disco is an extension of typical disco music, but with a strong 1980s touch.
The strongest pattern of Bright Disco is that several instruments commonly used by traditional disco music, such as rhythm guitar, strings (violin, viola, cello), trumpet, saxophone, trombone, piano, and drums were electronically emulated, or replaced by keyboard's icy sounds (brightness, pad-ens, saw-wave, bells or atmosphere).
The genre is sometimes denied as being such, by those that consider it as a kind of historical prelude to the Synth Pop era, but it has sufficient personality to be considered a valuable musical movement.
