The Cure had pigeon-holed themselves as a dark and brooding goth-rock band in the early 80's with albums such as Faith and Pornography. They broke away from this image with the albums Head on the Door and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. In 1989, Robert Smith and company returned to feelings of angst, depression, and regret to record the album Disintegration. This album has been considered a masterpiece by music critics and is a staple of any Cure fan's collection. It saw a return to the dark and brooding imagery of former days, except the band was able to employ pop hooks and lush well-produced orchestration. Complex, thought-provoking, and deeply emotional, some consider this the best album The Cure have ever, and will ever, produce.

It was the first Curealbum to be specifically recorded for CD and this is the reason that the vinyl release is without the songs "Last Dance" and "Homesick".
In 2002, the current Cure at the time performed all three albums in their entirety to a Berlin audience, and it was released on DVD as Trilogy in 2003.
The album was certified gold by the RIAA on June 28, 1989.
Disintegration is the mother, father, granddaddy and grand-nanny of albums whose feelings have lost their ways in search for their heart's ultimate desires.
An album that starts off with a song like "Plainsong," which kicks off the album more like it is ending it, needs a lot of patience and heartache to go through the healing journey of Disintegration.
Disintegration, probably Cure's best, has the finest love songs in rock: love seems even more special when it is burdened with the pangs of longing and aching.
