The Republic of Seychelles is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, some 1,600 km east of mainland Africa, northeast of the island of Madagascar.
The Seychelles became a crown colony separate from Mauritius in 1903 and independence was granted in 1976, with the country remaining a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
As the islands of the Seychelles had no indigenous population, the current Seychellois are composed of immigrants, mostly of French, African, Indian and Chinese descent.
