In the finals, the fifth and final round of dives was stage for a bizarre sequence of events, beginning with a spectator jumping into the pool. The then-leaders Bo Peng and Kenan Wang of China failed their final dive, for which they were awarded zero points. The highly regarded Russian pair, although only in fifth place at the time, had a chance to move up in the standings with their final dive, which had a potentially high-scoring 3.5 level of difficulty. One diver, however, hit the edge of the board with his feet halfway through a somersault (reminiscent of a Greg Louganis incident). The American pair, in second place at the time, also earned shockingly low scores on their final dive by effectively bomb-diving. This left the Greeks, who had already taken their final dive unaware of the imminent melt-down, to claim the gold, Greece's first-ever in diving and the hosts' first gold of the 2004 Athens Olympics. 2004 Summer Olympics - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article (2001 words)
Athens 2004 marked the first time since the 1996 Summer Olympics that all countries with a National Olympic Committee were in attendance.
It was the first Olympics since NBC had merged with Vivendi Universal Entertainment; the merger, along with the acquisitions of the Bravo and Telemundo networks, made it possible for the network to broadcast over 1200 hours of coverage during the games, triple what was broadcast in the U.S. four years earlier.
Officially there were 28 sports as swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polo are classified by the IOC as disciplines within the sport of aquatics, and wheelchair racing was a demonstation sport.
Diving at AllExperts (2994 words)
In tower events, competitors are allowed to perform their dives on either the five, seven and a half (generally just called seven) or ten metre towers, although high level meets, including the Olympic Games and world championships, usually require all dives to be executed from the ten metre.
The calculation of each dive's DD is based on the number of somersaults and twists the dive entails, the direction, the position, and the board or platform it is performed from.
High-DD dives such as 109B, forward four-and-a-half somersaults in the pike position, 5339D, reverse one-and-a-half with four-and-a-half twists in the free position, and 5355B, reverse two-and-half somersaults with two-and-a-half twists in the pike position might be competed in the next World's or Olympics.
