About the electorate

The division is named after Friedrich Leichhardt, an explorer and scientist. Portrait of Ludwig Leichhardt Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt (October 23, 1813 - 1848?) was a Prussian explorer and naturalist. ...

Most of the electorate is almost uninhabited except for small Aboriginal communities, but the extreme southeast, consisting of the northern half of the Wet Tropics, with rich volcanic soils instead of the extraordinarily infertile lateritic sands and gravels of Cape York proper, is quite densely populated and includes urban Cairns. 2007 Election

The current sitting member, the Liberal party's Warren Entsch, will not be contesting the election in 2007. A woman named Charlie McKillop was parachuted into the seat and has been pre-selected to replace Warren Entsch amid much warring between the factions. Charlie McKillop has lived most of her life in Canberra and has spent only the last year in Cairns, working as a spin-doctor for Warren Entsch. Before her appointment to Warren, Charlie lived in Canberra and was a media advisor for various other Liberal MP's. It was recently reported in The Cairns Post that various people within the Liberal Party, including Prime Minister John Howard, are calling for the dumping of Charlie McKillop in order for Warren Entsch to run again after internal polling showed Charlie is failing to gain traction with voters.

The Australian Labor Party's candidate is Jim Turnour. Jim has a passion for North Queensland and he will fight for the Building, Skilling & Protecting of Leichhardt. Jim lives in Smithfield with his wife Tiffany, who he met teaching kids to sail at the Cairns Yacht Club. Jim is from a farming background and has degrees in Agriculture and Economics. He has worked in business and in government. Jim currently works for the Department of Primary Industries, managing a large scale project helping farmers recover after Cyclone Larry. Jim is on the committee of Northern Beaches Landcare and the Trinity Inlet Catchment Management Association. He is also a member of SPEED (Southern Parent's Empowering Early Development), Cairns and District Chinese Association, Cairns Yacht Club, Cairns and Far North Environment Centre and is a guest presenter on Cairns Community Radio.

The National party is also running a candidate for the 2007 federal election. The National Party's candidate is Ian Crossland, who is currently recovering from a stroke.

Selwyn Johnston, an independent, is also running for this seat.
