The Division of Riverina is an Australian Electoral Division in the state of New South Wales. It is located in south-west rural New South Wales, generally following the Murrumbidgee River valley. The Division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 75 divisions to be contested at the first Federal election. The Division was named after the Riverina region in which it is located. In the 1984 redistribution, the Division was abolished and replaced by the Division of Riverina-Darling, but in the 1992 redistribution it was re-created. The Division covers a primarily agricultural area. Riverina requires irrigation and is the beneficiary of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, which allows this region to be not only the largest growing area in New South Wales (generating 65 percent of the production) but one of the largest in Australia (20 percent of the production).
It comprises the agricultural and pastoral areas west of the Great Dividing Range, south of the Murrumbidgee River (although parts of it are north of the Murrumbidgee, such as Griffith) and north of the Murray River (where it forms the border between NSW and Victoria).
The Riverina region is one of the most prosperous grape growing regions in Australia along with the Barossa Valley in South Australia.
