Dixville Township is a township located in Coos County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 75. In New Hampshire, locations, grants, townships (which are different from towns), and purchases are unincorporated portions of a county which are not part of any town and have limited self-government (if any, as many are uninhabited). Dixville was granted by the legislature to Timothy Dix, Jr., in 1805 and contained about 29,340 acres (119 km²) and the price was $4,500. It was organized for voting purposes in 1960.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 126.9 km² (49.0 mi²). 126.5 km² (48.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 75 people, 10 households, and 10 families residing in the township. The population density is 0.6/km² (1.5/mi²). There are 36 housing units at an average density of 0.3/km² (0.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.67% White, there being 1 person who is Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 10 households out of which 40.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 100.0% are married couples living together, 0.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 0.0% are non-families. 0.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 2.80.


In the township the population is spread out with 9.3% under the age of 18, 1.3% from 18 to 24, 16.0% from 25 to 44, 8.0% from 45 to 64, and 65.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 76 years. For every 100 females there are 74.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 61.9 males.

Dixville Notch is also the location, in dramatic mountains about 1800 feet above sea level, of The Balsams resort hotel; one of a handful of surviving New Hampshire grand hotels, it is situated on a 15,000 acre (61 km²) plot, accommodating golfing in the summer and skiing in the winter.
Dixville Notch is best known in connection with its longstanding middle-of-the-night vote in the U.S. presidential election, including during the New Hampshire primary (the first primary election in the U.S. presidential nomination process).
