Djamolidine Abdoujaparov (b. 28 February 1964) is former professional cyclist from Uzbekistan. Born in Tashkent, he went on to have a successful career in cycling. He was a specialist sprinter, and was nicknamed The Tashkent Terror as he was so ferocious in the sprints. His erratic sprinting style caused him to have a number of spectacular crashes. Abdoujaparov and Laurent Jalabert fought over the Tour de France's green sprinters jersey in the early 1990's. Most famously in 1991, "Abdou" won the competition despite his spectacular crash on the Champs-Élysées, where he swerved into the barrier, collided with a giant promotional Coke can and somersaulted into the air. He had to cross the line unaided to win, so the team picked him up, put him back on the bike and he rode slowly over the last few meters with team members and medical staff either side of him ready to catch him if he fell. In his last tour, he actually achieved a major mountain breakaway for his last stage win, an unsual feat for a sprinter.


Abdoujaparov was suspended after failing anti-doping tests conducted during the 1997 Tour de France’s second stage. The 33-year-old Abdoujaparov, whose eight previous wins in the Tour had come from sprint finishes, broke away from a group of five riders in the final climb of the day's 186.5-km ride from Besse.
Sprint specialist Djamolidine Abdoujaparov of Uzbekistan has been overshadowed by a new generation sprinters in this year's Tour de France, but on Sunday he showed he was still a force to be reckoned with.
He promised the Abdoujaparov of old would be back to his best over the next few days and possibly as soon as Monday in the 15th stage to Villeneuve-sur-Lot.
