Djursholm Castle

Djursholm is one of four suburban districts in Danderyd Municipality outside Stockholm, Sweden. Djursholm was one of the first suburban communities in Sweden, its history as such beginning in 1889 with the founding of Djursholm AB (Djursholm Inc.) by Henrik Palme and the subsequent 1890 inauguration of the tram line, connecting Djursholm to Stockholm. Djursholm is one of the wealthiest communities in Sweden.

The city of Djursholm received its privileges in 1914 and although being a city of its own it's considered a part of the city of Stockholm, at least according to Statistics Sweden. Today the city has a population of 8,740 (1996). The city, beginning its history in 1901 as a town, had been a station along the narrow railway between Stockholm and Rimbo since 1890. The railway still exists but is today called Roslagsbanan and is a part of the commuter railway lines of Stockholm.

Djursholm has one successful sports team; the football team Djursholms IF/FC Café Opera. The team play in red and white and currently play in the second highest division in Sweden (Superettan).

Notable citizens include authors Viktor Rydberg, Natanael Beskow and Verner von Heidenstam, artists Elsa Beskow and Alice Tegnér, Field Marshal Johan Banér and Nobel laureate Hannes Alfvén.
