In 1736, Dmitry Vinogradov was sent abroad to study chemistry, metallurgy, and mining. Upon his return to Russia in 1744, he was sent to a ceramics manufactory, established by the Russian government in Oranienbaum (today's Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory). At that time the porcelain was produced only in China, Japan and in Saxony (see Meißen porcelain). The recipe for porcelain was a closely guarder secret and the price of the porcelain exceeded the price of silver. For eight years Vinogradov and Mikhail Lomonosov were developing an original recipe for the porecelain.
