Ukhtomsky was born in a village to the north of Yaroslavl, where his ancestors used to be rulers. At the age of 12, he moved to Moscow and studied there under Ivan Michurin. For the coronation of Elizabeth Petrovna, he devised a triumphal arch on Tverskaya Street and the more famous Red Gate. The grand bell-tower of the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra was one of several projects where Ukhtomsky worked with his mentor Michurin.
