History
The club was established in 1925 as a team of the Petrovsky factory. It was renamed "Petrovets" the next year. The team entered the first Soviet Championship by the name of "Stal" (Russian for steel) in 1936 in one of the lower divisions. In 1947 "Stal" was united with another club from Dnipropetrovsk, "Dinamo". From 1949 until 1961 the team carried the name of "Metalurg" (from English metal work) for the most of the time. In 1954 "Metalurg" achieved the semi-final of the USSR Cup competition, where it lost to "Spartak" from Yerevan. 1925 (MCMXXV) was a common year starting on Thursday (link will take you to calendar). ...

In 1961 the team was handed over to its new sponsor, the "Yugmash" (the Southern machine-producing factory), which at that time was one of the most powerful factories in the whole Soviet Union. The new sponsor changed the team's name to "Dnipro". But the team's performance didn't changed until after 1968, when "Dnipro" obtained Andriy Biba and the new coach - Valeriy Lobanovskiy. After that it took the team three years to get promoted to the Elite league and take the sixth place out of 16 teams in 1972. 1961 (MCMLXI) was a common year starting on Sunday (link will take you to calendar). ...

In 1973 and 1976 "Dnipro" reached the semi-finals of the USSR Cup competition again. In 1978 the team was relegated to the lower league for two years. Their next entrance wasn't as inviting as their first one and the team enjoyed the company of other weak teams in the league. Therefore the governing body of the team hired new promising coaches - Vladimir Yemets and Gennadiy Zhizdik. After that "Dnipro" became a strong contender of the Soviet championship and won a couple of them. One - with Yemets and Zhizdik in 1983, and another one with Yevgeniy Kucherevskiy in 1988. During this time for the team played such players as Protasov, Litovchenko, Cherednik, Taran, and many others. 1973 (MCMLXXIII) was a common year starting on Monday. ...
