The Dock Museum is a museum situated in the British town of Barrow-in-Furness (Cumbria). It's exhibits are largely based around the history of the town, especially the shipbuilding industry at VSEL (now BAE) and the Steelworks industry - of which Barrow once had the worlds largest. The current museum was established in 1994, when 50,000 people visited it in it's first year. Visitor numbers are always increasing in the Dock Museum, and in 2001 it saw an admission 120,000. Exhibits

On initial entrance to the museum, the majority of the ground floors exhibitions are about the town's history, how it was established, aswell as how it was affected by World War II. There is even an area dedicated to nearby Furness Abbey, once one of the country's richest and grandest abbeys. The largest part of the museum is to the left, where 4 floors containing models of ships and submarines built in Barrow, along with other maritime exhibits can be found. There are interactive computers, local works of art as well as a cinema screening images of the town's past on the very bottom floor. This entire wing, is built where one of the shipyard's docks used to be, the very dock that was Aircraft carrier HMS Invincible was launched, the dock wall can still be bearing the height marks, and dripping with water. This is the oldest part of the museum, and is one of it's main attractions. The museum is home to the Strollers Coffee Shop, a Gift shop, a Maritime themed adventure playground, Toilets, disabled access, a studio for hire aswell as access to the Channelside Walk, which leads up to the towns old slag banks, with great views of Barrow, Walney Island, the Lake District and the Isle of Man on a good day. A gift shop is a store primarily selling souvenirs relating to a particular topic, often to simply provide evidence that the consumer has visited that location. ...
