British non-derogative slang for a dock worker, i.e. someone who loads and unloads ships and performs various other jobs required at a sea port. A docker is expected to be physicially strong and able to follow orders.


Traditionally, a docker would have no fixed job and turn up at the docks in the morning hoping to find someone willing to employ him (dockers are almost exclusively male) for the day. Due to changes in employment laws, jobs have become either permanent or they have been to converted to temping jobs.
