A Documentary Channel is a specialty television channel which focuses on broadcasting documentaries. Some documentary channels further specialise by dedicating their programming to specific types of documentaries or documentaries in a specific area of knowledge. Documentary Channel US [1] and The History Channel are an examples of this. There is some overlap between news channels and documentary channels, but while a documentary channel may also broadcast programs about current affairs, as a rule, it will air longer, more in-depth segments and not present up-to-the-minute news coverage. Also, many other TV channels regularly air documentaries, but unless a channel is significantly dedicated to documentary-type programming it probably will not be considered a documentary channel. As of 2006, some of the most famous documentary channels are the Discovery Channel and the National Geographic Channel. A specialty channel or specialty service is a television channel, generally not available through conventional broadcast television, which consists of programming focused on a single type or targeted at a specific demographic. ... The intention is for the IDA Awards special to migrate to Sundance Documentary Channel once it launches.
Iwanowski commented, "The IDA is devoted to supporting documentary filmmakers in the creation and distribution of their work which dovetails perfectly with the mission of Sundance Channel, Sundance Documentary Channel and the long-term commitment to documentaries on the part of the Sundance Institute.
