Introduced on September 25, 1964 for the 1965 model year as a hardtop coupe, the Monaco was based on the Dodge Polara and Dodge Custom 880 two door hardtop coupes. The Monaco received special badging, different taillight and grille treatment, and a center console, as well as a 383 cid/315 hp V-8 engine as standard equipment with larger engines available as options. Chrysler Canada Ltd. fielded a Dodge Monaco which was Dodge's version of the Plymouth Sport Fury in Canada. It was available in hardtop coupe or convertible body styles. However, Canadian Monacos were equipped with Plymouth dashboards in 1965 and 1966. Unlike the American Monaco, the Canadian Monaco could be had with the 318 in³ V8 or even the slant six. For 1966, in the U.S., the Monaco replaced the Custom 880 series and the former Monaco became the Monaco 500. The basic Monaco was available in hardtop coupe, 4-door (pillarless) hardtop sedan, conventional 4-door (pillared) sedan, and 4-door station wagon bodystyles. In the U.S., the Monaco 500 was available only as a hardtop coupe. The Canadian Dodge hung onto the "Monaco" name for the Sport Fury equivalent and Polara 880 for the Fury III competitor.

For 1967, all full-sized Dodges, the Monaco included, would receive a significant face-lift with all-new sheet metal. The hardtop coupes would adopt a new semi-fastback roofline with a reverse slanted rear quarter window.

In Canada the Monaco name was applied to all premium trim level, full-sized Dodge products (sedans, coupes, and station wagons), replacing the Polara 880 at the top of the Dodge line. Taking the Monaco's place as a premium full-size model was the Monaco 500, which was available only as a two-door hardtop and convertible. Early advertisment image of the 1962 Dodge Custom 880 four-door hardtop. ...

Changes would be minimal for 1968. Dodge would discontinue the Monaco 500 model at the end of the 1968 model run in the United States and at the end of the 1970 model run in Canada.

For the 1969 model year, all full-sized Chrysler cars, including the Dodge Monaco, would adopt Chrysler's new "fuselage" styling. The 1969 Dodge Monaco and Polara models offered the "Super-Lite" option, which placed a quartz road lamp on the driver side grille for better visibility. Despite the fanfare, Dodge dropped the light option at the end of the year because of lack of consumer interest and various challenges to its legality in certain states.

The 1970 models would receive new front and rear styling that included a front bumper that wrapped around the grill and headlights. 1971 would see the introduction of the Monaco Brougham, but this was originally an option package for the Monaco and not considered to be a separate model by Dodge.

With the 1972 model year, full-sized Dodges would receive another face lift with all-new sheet metal. For the first time the Monaco would received concealed headlamps, while the Polara would continue to make do with fixed headlamps.

The 1974 model year Dodge was completely redesigned with an all-new chassis and all-new sheet metal. The Polara and Polara Custom models were discontinued and replaced by a basic Monaco and Monaco Custom respectively. The previous Monaco would be replaced by a new Monaco Brougham, this time a full-fledged model in its own right and not an option package as it had previously been. Gone were the hidden headlamps of the previous models, replaced by fixed headlamps on all Monacos.

For the 1975 model year changes to the base Monaco would be minimal. However, the Monaco Custom would be replaced by a new Royal Monaco and the Monaco Brougham replaced by a new Royal Monaco Brougham. The 1975 Royal Monaco and Royal Monaco Brougham featured concealed headlamps. (The Royal prefix recalled the Dodge Royal and Dodge Custom Royal models of the 1950s.) 1975 would be the last year that the 4-door (pillarless) hardtop sedan would be available. After the start of the 1975 model year, a limited prouction option for Royal Monaco Brougham coupes would be the Diplomat package. The Dodge Royal Monaco Brougham Diplomat coupe featured a landau vinyl roof with opera windows and a wide steel roof band. Changes to the 1976 model would be minimal.

As a result of the 1970s' energy crisis, Chrysler shifted the Monaco nameplate to the midsize B platform for 1977. The new 1977 mid-sized Dodge Monaco would replace the previous Dodge Coronet 4-door sedan, 4-door station wagon and Dodge Charger hardtop coupe. A Dodge Monaco Brougham would replace the previous Dodge Coronet Brougham 4-door sedan and Dodge Charger Sport hardtop coupe, and a Dodge Monaco Crestwood would replace the previous Dodge Coronet Crestwood station wagon. (The Dodge Charger S.E. would continue unchanged.) This article is about energy crises in general. ... Chryslers B platform was the basis for rear wheel drive cars from 1962 through 1979. ...

For 1977, the older, larger full-sized Dodge Royal Monaco and Dodge Royal Monaco Brougham remained available, though this would be their last year of production.

The Monaco nameplate disappeared at the end of the 1978 model year. Both the mid-sized Dodge Monaco and the full-sized Dodge Royal Monaco would be replaced by the Dodge St. Regis for the 1979 model year. The Dodge St. ...

Available in only a single bodystyle, a so-called 4-door pillared hardtop sedan where the side windows in the doors were frameless, the St. Regis was marketed and priced as full-sized car. It was also considered to be a full-sized car by the U.S. E.P.A. based on its passenger compartment and trunk volumes. Sizewise, it was comparable to the all-new competing down-sized full-sized models from General Motors and Ford. The St. Regis was based on the same chassis as the previous mid-sized Dodge Monaco, although with a slightly longer overall wheelbase and overall length. The St. Regis would remain in production through the 1981 model year.

For 1987, Chrysler had bought the assets of American Motors, mostly for the Jeep brand. During 1990, Chrysler needed a way to sell the required amount of the newly introduced Renault-based Eagle Premiers. The Monaco name was briefly revived for a rebadged version of the Premier, differing only in a crosshair grille, different taillights and badging, as Dodge's top-of-the-line model as a replacement for the rear-wheel drive Diplomat. Despite Dodge's larger dealer network, even fewer Monacos were sold than Eagles. The slightly smaller, if less technically advanced Dynasty was already a known entity and by far the more popular among Dodge buyers. The latter-day Monaco failed to gain wide acceptance from a public that was already wary of the reliability of previous French-designed AMC cars. Although it was built at the Brampton, Ontario, plant in Canada, the new Monaco was never sold in Canada, because the Mitsubishi Galant-based 2000GTX was Dodge's top-line sedan in the early 1990s. The Monaco (and, for that matter, the Dynasty as well) was discontinued and dismissed as a market failure. The Dodge Dynasty, was a front-wheel drive sedan that was introduced in 1987 as a 1988 model to replace the 600 as Dodges mid-size car. ... The Mitsubishi Galant is an automobile manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors since 1969. ...

That would not be the end, however. The French-designed platform, its state of the art manufacturing plant, and the key executive from American Motors behind the Monaco's design would be the starting point to what many assumed was a completely new design, the very successful and highly rated "cab-forward" Dodge Intrepid in late 1992 when production resumed at Brampton Assembly. The Dodge Intrepid was a large four-door, full-size, front-wheel drive sedan. ... Brampton Assembly is a DaimlerChrysler automobile factory in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. ...
