Fran, White, and Me'Shell preparing to decimate another team Peter LaFleur, a broke man who makes his money by being the owner of an old crappy gym that has few members and a group of them who adore him. The story begins with him finding out he hasn't paid the mortgage rate on his gym in a long time and he has to pay $50,000 to pay off the gym. But someone else has paid the other payments off. Leaving Peter to pay 50,000 dollars in 30 days or else he loses the gym and the person who paid the other mortgages off were White Goodman. White Goodman is the owner of Globo-Gym. A 5-star gymnasium. The gym cost Four Million Dollars! White Goodman tells Peter that he has 30 days to pay of the money and says that he's going to build a parking structure where the gym used to be for his members. White Goodman is a in shape man who likes showing off his body and wears tight clothing and spandex. He has a spandex outfit that has inflatable balls that makes him look more manly. Which he tries out for Catherine. A banker who tells is in charge of the payments for the gym and telling White the status and White has a crush on her. White later gets her fired so she would date him but she whacks his face into a pole and he says its through. One of Peters members find out that there is a dodgeball contest in Las Vegas and the prize is 50,000 dollars. They enter the contest but White was secretly spying on them and got the info and joined the contest also. In Las Vegas the team gets into the game but makes a bad first impression when the team clothing got mixed up with a group of gloth punks. And later get their clothes back. Catherine also joins the team after White says its threw with her after she attacked him. Average Joe's Gym is the gym Peter owns and the team name. Patches O'Hollahan, a former all star player is the new coach for the team and coaches them during the competition. The Purple Cobras, White Goodmans team is fighting there way to the top until its Peter and White's team. They have the final game against eachother. Average Joe's almost forfeited the game when Peter didnt show up after White bribed Peter to give up for 100,000 dollars if Peter quits the game and give White the deed to Peter's gym. Peter comes back and Steve the Pirate doesnt show after Peter scolds him telling him he isnt a pirate. And Justin shows up late after a cheer leading show before a game. The game plays well but only Justin remained and gets the team back in. During the game White's anger got out of control for throwing a ball at Catherine's face when she got hit by the ball so it wouldnt hit Peter. He had to be taken to the shame triangle to be boo'd at. The game went to sudden-death and Peter won against White. Before the finals Patches died after being crushed by a sign hanging from the ceiling in a casino. White tells Peter that he won and Peter lost because Peter gave White the deed. But Peter says that he took the money and bet it on his team to win. 50-1. And won 5,000,000 dollars! Peter buys Globo-gym and fires White from the business. White is hysterical and says Peter is going down. Peter took all of the work out machines from Globo gym and put them in his gym and Peters gym is turned around and is cleaned up and has a lot of people there. At the end White Goodman has turned into a 800 pound man and is eating a lot because of his depression of losing everything he had. He turned into the person he was before he found Globo-Gym. Institutions in the movie - ESPN 8 ("The Ocho"): "If it's almost a sport, we've got it here!" This network is a riff on ESPN's growing empire of sports TV networks, which in 2004 numbered 5, not counting secondary services such as the Spanish-language "ESPN Deportes". In addition, the title is a reference to the nickname of "The Deuce" for ESPN-2 when it first appeared. This channel pokes fun at ESPN, constantly spawning new television channels which broadcast everything from soccer to hotdog eating contests.
- The American Dodgeball Association of America: The sanctioning body for the sport who has laid down the rules as follows:
- 6 players with one ball each; no gender specifications
- Catching of the ball counts as a reversal (that is, the throwing player is out and another player on the catching team is allowed to come back on the field)
- No stepping beyond the red line which cuts the field horizontally in half
- Only ADAA balls can be used; personal balls are prohibited
- Sudden death: If all players but one from each team are eliminated, and one commits a double fault, one player from both teams will participate in this overtime from two triangles facing each other. The first player to hit his opponent wins; catching is irrelevant. If a player were to step out of the triangle, that player would be disqualified.
- All players on a team must wear matching uniforms.
- Dyslexic players are not allowed on court.
- Obscure Sports Quarterly: A quarterly magazine which reports on obscure sports, such as Midget Tossing.
- Las Vegas University Learning Annex: The host of the Las Vegas International Dodgeball Open
- Über American Films: The Film institute that produced and distributed the Dodgeball documentary from 1938. A possible reference to Germans or Nazis, although the term Über has a very positive connotation in modern times.

Trivia In order to meet Wikipedia's quality standards, this article's trivia section requires cleanup. Content in the trivia section should be integrated into other appropriate areas of the article. - The rivalry between The Average Joes and the Purple Cobras is a reference to that between the Joes and Cobras from G.I. Joe. "Purple cobra" is also slang for penis.
- In a DVD extra, director Rawson Marshall Thurber shows a joke "director's cut" with the movie ending in Average Joe's defeat. In that version the line "They came here for absolutely nothing" ended the movie, and the credits rolled. Thurber states on the commentary that due to poor screen testing, the studio forced him to replace that ending with their own up-beat one, the one seen in theaters. Thurber further states on this commentary that he was so incensed by the studio's actions that he "left the film for a week," and that he still believes the defeat of Average Joe's "was the right way to end the movie." He has also said that in the early drafts of the script, Average Joe's did lose, but Steve the Pirate was going to come back with a large amount of money he had won at Treasure Island after a pedestrian on The Strip (played by Thurber) told him to go back there. [citation needed]
- If you pay heavy attention to the beginning of the movie, White Goodman states "Six years ago" on the Globo Gym commercial and in subtitles it reads, "White Goodman 1987." This implies the year is 1993, but this is clearly false, as evidence later in the film suggests. Lance Armstrong refers to his "5 Tour De France victories", which clearly dates the film to 2004. Also, it is mentioned that ESPN8 presented obscure sports since 1999. It is also possible that the Globo Gym "commercial" has been in constant re-runs, which could also add to the discrepancy.
- The treasure chest containing the winnings that save the day bears a plaque that reads Deus Ex Machina.
- In the unrated edition, Peter La Fleur, Kate Veatch and her bi-sexual friend Joyce engage in group kissing after Average Joe's victory.
- When White is knocked to the floor in the final match, Cotton McKnight's call of "Down goes Goodman, Down goes Goodman!" is a reference to Howard Cosell's famous call of "Down goes Frazier, Down Goes Frazier!" in the 1973 heavyweight boxing title fight between Joe Frazier and George Foreman. He also says "Do you believe in unlikelyhoods?" which is a reference to the famous call of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" where Al Michaels screams "Do you believe in Miracles?"
- Thurber states that he based the red and yellow colors of the Average Joes' uniforms on those worn by Hickory High School in the film Hoosiers.
- In the restaurant, when White Goodman says "Ball me!" meaning "Pass me a ball", the line may have been inspired by the way J.J Hunsucker would say "Match me!" to ask for a light in The Sweet Smell Of Success. Or, perhaps a reference to the popular phrase "Beer Me."
- After his appearance in the film, Rip Torn became league commissioner on the third season of the TV series Extreme Dodgeball.
- On movie posters the phrase is "Grab Life By The Ball" while on the DVD cover it says "Grab Life By The Balls". The latter is a common phrase in British English.
- Candice Michelle and Jen England, dodgeball dancers in the film, later qualified for the WWE Diva Search. Michelle (the chubby or bloated dancer in the middle of the back row) was later eliminated from the 2004 Diva Search competition but became a diva for World Wrestling Entertainment anyway. England (dancer on the right side (facing from the camera) of the back row), meanwhile, made it to the finals of the 2006 Diva Search before being eliminated.
- After introducing "Blade" (played by Rusty Joiner), a member of his team who bears a striking resemblance to Val Kilmer, Blade clicks his teeth together in the manner of Iceman in Top Gun.
- This is the second film Ben Stiller has been in where his character is a crazed fitness/nutrition guru. He had a similar role in the film Heavyweights.
- Peter La Fleur is a homage to hockeys legend Guy Lafleur.
- It is worth noting Jason Batemen, as Pepper Brooks, says "right you are" to Gary Cole, as Cotton McKnight, several times. This may be a nod to the Spike TV show MXC where fictional character Vic Romano often says to (also fictional) Kenny Blankenship "Right you are Ken".
- The Joes hang out at a bar called "Dirty Sanchez".
- Before their first match against a Girl Brownies squad, La Fleur can be seen smoking.
- There is a reference to the Poem Jabberwocky, By Lewis Carol, during the final match.
