Dodgeville is a town located in Iowa County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,407. The City of Dodgeville is located within the town.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 233.8 km˛ (90.3 mi˛). 232.7 km˛ (89.9 mi˛) of it is land and 1.0 km˛ (0.4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,407 people, 510 households, and 395 families residing in the town. The population density is 6.0/km˛ (15.7/mi˛). There are 588 housing units at an average density of 2.5/km˛ (6.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.37% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 0.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 510 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.6% are married couples living together, 4.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% are non-families. 17.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.15.


In the town the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $49,327, and the median income for a family is $58,203. Males have a median income of $34,474 versus $26,591 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,521. 4.9% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Ridgeway Elementary School, part of the Dodgeville School District and located in the nearby village of Ridgeway, was accused of changing the lyrics to "Silent Night" and forcing the students to sing a secularized version.
In January 2006, the Dodgeville School District demanded a widely distributed apology, a retraction of claims by the Liberty Counsel that the school's policies are "hostile" to the U.S. Constitution, and $23,899.48 in damages.
