Dolichol is an isoprenoid compound similar to cholesterol. It is adducted to proteins during posttranslational modification. In adition, it plays a role in protein N-glycosylation.


It is a product of the HMG-CoA reductase pathway.

The major dolichols among the various tissues were of the 17, 18, 19 and 20 isoprene unit containing types and the proportions were unaffected by aging.
