Small fortress was built here during Great Moravia period. The place is mentioned in written document from 1312. During 13th century the place gets inhabited by German colonists. In 1460 it receives city rights. From the beginning of 16th century Habaners (Habáni, members of anabaptist sects expelled from German lands and Switzerland) settled here. These were expelled again in 1622. Great Moravia (Czech Velká Morava, Slovak Veľká Morava, Latin Magna Moravia) was a Slav state existing on the territory of present-day Moravia and Slovakia between 833 and the early 10th century. ...
