He was best known for his roles as Gil McGowan on the soap opera Another World (1972 - 1977), and as Carl Kanisky on the sitcom Gimme a Break! (1981 until his death in 1985). He also appeared on an episode of "Dark Shadows" in 1966. Dolph Sweet, who starred as the police chief in the television comedy series ''Gimme a Break,'' died of cancer Wednesday at Tarzana Hospital here, said Matt Bozek, a spokesman for NBC-TV.
Sweet, who was also a veteran Broadway and movie character actor, played Police Chief Karl Kanisky in the fictional town of Glen Lawn in the four-year-old series.
Sweet, who was born in New York City and was once head of Barnard College's drama division, acted in more than 50 theater roles, several on Broadway, and in more than 30 movies.
