Dominican National Team the soccer national team of the Dominican Republic. The team only meets for occasional meetings in small Caribbean competitions or for the FIFA qualification rounds. Positioned on the 170ths area on the FIFA rankings the national soccer team is often forgotten in a country where baseball is king. The Dominican Republic launched its first qualifying campaign for the 1978 FIFA World Cup™, but the dream was over all too quickly. In Caribbean pre-qualifying Haiti crushed them 3-0 in both legs. Not until [USA] '94 did the team re-enter the pre-qualifying competition. Despite their second-leg 1-1 draw against Puerto Rico, a 2-1 defeat in the first leg had done the damage and they played no further part in the preliminary rounds. Since then, the Dominican Republic have featured regularly in the pre-qualifiers. They registered their first win in 1996 against Aruba, but Trinidad and Tobago proved too strong for them ahead of the finals in 1998 and 2002. The team went with a record of one win, one draw and two losses both to Trinidad and Tobago in qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup. Kervin Severino, Junior Mejia and Edward Espinal are some of the best Dominican soccer players. Victor Núñez could become the first Dominican to play in a FIFA World Cup if his adopted country Costa Rica plays him in Germany 2006.
