Encyclopedia > Don Alias

Don Alias is a jazz percussionist.

Alias has performed on dozens--perhaps hundreds--of recordings, and is perhaps best known for his associations with Miles Davis and David Sanborn, though he has also perfomed or recorded with Weather Report, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius and many others.

Though Alias is a capable trap set performer, he is better known for his skill at congas and other hand drums.

Don Alias - Verve Records (449 words)
Percussionist par excellence Don Alias remains best known for his work at the vanguard of the fusion movement, exploring both sides of the jazz-rock equation via contributions to landmark sessions headlined by Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell.
Alias and Perla resurrected Stone Alliance in 1980 with pianist Kenny Kirkland and tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer, issuing the acclaimed Heads Up; during this time he also worked with Pastorious' new band, Word of Mouth, appearing on its self-titled 1982 Warner Bros. debut LP as well as several subsequent live releases.
Alias and Perla were also collaborating on a joint memoir at the time of the percussionist's sudden death at his Manhattan home on March 28, 2006.
