A defensive defenceman, known for his superb shot-blocking and bone-jarring bodychecks, Awrey played for the Niagara Falls Flyers of the OHA before being signed by the Bruins. He made his NHL debut in 1963-64 for the Bruins, his first of 17 seasons in the league. Awrey was part of two Stanley Cup winning teams with the Bruins, in 1970 and 1972. He was also part of the Montreal Canadiens team that won the Stanley Cup in 1976, but did not play in any playoff games that season. Awrey was well respected among his peers as a very dependable rearguard in the National Hockey League, yet no one ever confused him with the world's elite rearguards.
Awrey is also quick to point out that another Boston Bruin, Dallas Smith, likely would have made the team over him had he not declined his invitation due to off-season farming commitments.
Awrey released a lot of his frustrations against the unsuspecting Swedes in a 2 game exhibition series played in Sweden that was intended to give the NHL pros a short opportunity to get used to the larger international playing surface.
