Born in 1756, Carlos first saw action as a Spanish naval officer during the Siege of Gibralter from June 21, 1779 to February 6, 1783 during the American Revolution. In command of the Spanish fleet during the Haiti expedition under French General Leclerc in 1801, he would later lead the Spanish fleet supporting Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve during the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805. During the battle however, he was seriously wounded and within several months Carlos died of his wounds in early 1806.
