Don Francisco De Almeida (born 1450) was a Portuguese admiral, who was send to India in 1503, where he defeated Zamorin of Kozhikode. This was the first victory of the Portuguese in India. He constructed St. Angelo Fort in the Kannur district of Kerala state in India in 1505. The Dutch captured the fort from Portuguese in 1663, and sold the fort to King Ali Raja of Arakkal kingdom. Almeida built more forts in India, but relied mainly on his fleets to secure control of all sea trade.
