Donald Aronow was the wealthy designer, builder and racer of the famous Cigarette speed boat, among others. He built speedboats for the Shah of Iran, Charles Keating, Robert Vesco and George H. W. While Cigarette boats are known as the preferred speedboats among the elite, it is also rumored that their great speed made them a popular choice among cocaine runners. Aronow was murdered in his car on the street where his boat companies operated on February 3, 1987. One rumor in Miami said that Aronow was going to talk to police about cocaine trafficking. Authorities were going to serve him a subpoena to talk to him the day after the murder. Another rumor was that on the afternoon of the murder, Aronow's buddy Don Soffer was told “You’re next” on the phone at Turnberry Island. None of these rumors were ever substantiated and were discounted by the police during the intense investigation into Aronow's death. Having made his money in the construction business in New Jersey in the late 1950s, Aronow moved to Miami in 1961 and began racing boats for a hobby. By the end of 1962 he had formed the Formula Marine boat company which he then sold and started Donzi Marine. In 1966 he founded Magnum Marine and in 1970 after campaigning his "The Cigarette" around the world and winning the World Championship as well as the U.S., Bahamian, French, English, Italian and Swedish championships, he started Cigarette Racing Team, using his own designs. Having sold Cigarette for the last time (after having sold it and purchasing it back in the late 70's) he formed USA Racing Team and built 39' catamarans called the Blue Thunder for the United States Customs agency. The Blue Thunders were used by Customs to patrol US waters and run down illegal offshore activities. Aronow's close friend at the time, Vice President George Bush, was a former Cigarette owner and was involved in testing out the 39' cats prior to government approval. His boats won over 350 offshore races, owned every speed record in every country at one time and he was a two time world champion and 3 time U.S. champion. He was elected to every powerboating Hall of Fame in existence and was one of only 2 Americans to have ever received the UIM Gold medal of Honor, the other being Gar Wood. Aronow, who almost single-handedly created the offshore powerboat boom, was shot in the middle of a road that was a veritable monument to the man: Both sides are lined with dry docks that store hundreds of the Aronow-designed Cigarette boats.
Aronow's boat-racing life, which began after he retired from the construction business in New York and moved south in 1960, was ripe with anecdotes that made Aronow seem larger than life.
Although Aronow was notorious for pulling dangerous pranks, often to harass business competitors, friends said the man's ability to laugh at himself made him one of the best-liked people in the boating industry.
