Donald Benham spent eight years as business editor, political reporter and columnist for the Winnipeg Sun. He was Director of Public Relations for the University of Winnipeg and served as Press Assistant to former prime minister Joe Clark. At Winnipeg’s major community college he established and taught a Communications B.A. program in conjunction with a local University, and more recently he designed the curriculum for Politics, Society and the Mass Media, which he presently teaches at another university. In broadcasting, he hosted the popular CBC radio program Questionnaire. The University of Winnipeg received its charter in 1967 but its roots date back more than 130 years. ...
After serving as Director of Communications to former Mayor Glen Murray, he successfully campaigned to become City Councillor for the River Heights-Fort Garry ward in 2004, and soon cemented his reputation for speaking out on social and civic issues, as well as supporting public infrastructure against privatization and keeping civic politics vibrant by actively encouraging citizen involvement. For exercise and enjoyment, but also to simultaneously make several personally held important points, he cycles rather than driving whenever possible. In seasonable conditions this is more often than not as Winnipeg is not a large city. In winter he exemplifies his environmental concerns by using public transit whenever practical.
