Donald Edward Graham was born on April 22, 1945 to the late Philip Graham and Katharine Graham in Baltimore, Maryland.
Graham became publisher of The Washington Post in 1979, succeeding his mother, who retained her corporate positions of chairman of the board and CEO of the holding company.
Donald Graham became CEO in 1991 and chairman of the company in May 1993, while Katharine Graham changed into the position of chairman of the executive committee of The Washington Post Company.

Graham was an alumna of The Madeira School (to which her father had donated much land) and attended Vassar College before transferring to the University of Chicago.
Graham was de facto publisher of the newspaper from 1963 onward, formally assuming the title in 1979, and chairman of the board from 1973 to 1991.
In her 1997 autobiography, Graham comments at many points about how close her husband was to politicians of his day (he was instrumental, for example, in getting Lyndon Johnson to be the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee in 1960), and how such personal closeness with politicians later became unacceptable in journalism.
