Mackay was educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh and at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated LLB and LLM, and at the University of Virginia, where he graduated LLM. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1971 and practised for five years as such. The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1583 as a renowned centre for teaching in Edinburgh, Scotland. ... In 1976 he was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates . He served as an Advocate Depute from 1982 to 1985, and was appointed Queen?s Counsel in 1987. Mackay served as a member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board from 1989 to 1995. He was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland in 1995. From 1995 to 1997 he served as Lord Advocate. He was created a life peer in 1995, as Baron Mackay of Drumadoon, of Blackwaterfoot in the District of Cunninghame, and became a Privy Counsellor in 1996. Between May 1997 and March 2000 he combined practice as a senior counsel with an active role in the House of Lords as Opposition Spokesman on Scotland and Constitutional Affairs. He was was appointed a Judge of the Court of Session and High Court of Justiciary in March 2000. Her Majestys Solicitor General for Scotland is one of the Law Officers of the Crown, and the deputy of the Lord Advocate, whose duty is to advise the Crown and the Scottish Executive on Scots Law. ... Her Majestys Advocate, known as the Lord Advocate (Morair Tagraidh in Scots Gaelic), was the chief legal adviser of the United Kingdom Government and the Crown in Scotland for both civil and criminal matters until the passing of the Scotland Act 1998. ...
