Donald Sinclair (1910 - June 28, 1995) was a British veterinarian made famous as the eccentric character Siegried Farnon in the books by James Herriot. In 1939 he bought 23 Kirkgate, Thirsk, and in 1940 interviewed Alf Wight for the position of assistant. The rest as they say is history. When Wight's first book was published, Donald was apparently most offended by his portrayal saying "Alfred (he never called wight "alf"), this book is a real test of our friendship". However, things calmed down and the pair continued to work together until they retired. Opinion is divided as to whether Sinclair was as eccentric in reality as he was portrayed in the books, however it seems likely that even if his character was exaggerated, he was unique! Sinclair died of an overdose on June 28, 1995, his brother having died several years earlier, his wife the previous year, and his closest friend and partner four months previously. 1910 in topic: Arts Architecture- Art- Film- Literature- Music- Television Science and technology Aviation- Rail transport- Science Other topics Australia- Canada- Ireland- South Africa- Sport Births- Deaths Lists of leaders: State leaders - Religious leaders 1910 was a common year starting on Saturday (see link for calendar). ... Despite his authorial success, he continued practising until a few years before his death with his colleague DonaldSinclair.
He also renamed Donald and his brother Brian, Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, respectively.
