Donalsonville is a city located in Seminole County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,796. The city is the county seat of Seminole County6.


Geography

Donalsonville is located at 31°2'27" North, 84°52'42" West (31.040887, -84.878382)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²). 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.25% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,796 people, 1,008 households, and 697 families residing in the city. The population density is 271.2/km² (702.8/mi²). There are 1,116 housing units at an average density of 108.3/km² (280.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 37.23% White, 58.73% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.75% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 3.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,008 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.6% are married couples living together, 27.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.23.


In the city the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 82.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $20,687, and the median income for a family is $25,679. Males have a median income of $24,464 versus $16,451 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,095. 32.0% of the population and 25.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 45.6% of those under the age of 18 and 27.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Even though I left at a young age, my memories of Donalsonville are of my family,farmers,peanuts,Lake Seminole, Tenile Street and Highway 84 to Brinson-east- and the Chattahoochee River-west.
Donalsonville will always be the same to me no matter how much it changes.
