Dong Biwu (Chinese: 董必武, Wade-Giles: Tung Pi-wu) (1886 - April 2, 1975) was a Chinesecommunist political leader during the regime of Mao Zedong. He was the President (Chairman of the Executive Committee) of China from 1948 to 1949 and from 1972 until his death. He was also vice-chairman of the committee from 1968 until 1972, jointly with Song Qingling. He died just a year before Mao and several other important politicians died. Dong participated in the Long March from Jiangxi to northern China 1934–35 and during the 1937–45 war against Japan liaised between the CCP and the Kuomintang (Guomindang, nationalist) government of Jiang Jie Shi (Chiang Kai-shek).
Born in Hubei province, into a landless gentry family, Dong received a classical education and studied in Japan 1913–18, after the Republican Revolution of 1911.
