The city has direct jurisdiction over two districts, Dongying and Hekou, and three counties, Guangrao, Kenli and Lijin.
History
The city was established in 1983, as a base for developing the Yellow River Delta and the country's second largest oilfield, Shengli Oil Field. The oilfield was discovered in 1964 near a small village called Dongying, which gave its name to the city.
Geography
Dongying city is located on the banks of the Yellow River Delta. It has an area of 8,053 square km.
Economy
A large part of the city's economy revolves around petroleum and the nearby Shengli Oil Field.
Industries include: petroleum, petrochemistry, saline chemistry, papermaking, machinery, electronics, construction, building materials, foodstuff processing, textile and light industries.
Topping the list of fascinating things, the week I arrived back in Dongying saw a major protest downtown that led to shutting down all traffic in the area, which happened to encompass my school.
Well, it's freezing in Dongying now, and the protestors apparently got tired of waiting out in the cold while oil executives did nothing inside their warm building.
Dongying may be a relatively small city (2 million) but a large percentage of Dongying residents work for the oil company or a related business.
