In this game, Diddy Kong and his girlfriend Dixie Kong have to save Donkey Kong from Kaptain K. Rool, who was called King K. Rool in the previous game. It has a slightly more pirateish theme than the first, and included many new features like the ability to transform into various helpful animals. (While the first game included the animals, one rode them rather than became them.) This game features not only the return of familiar characters like Cranky Kong and Funky Kong but also introduces Wrinkly Kong, Cranky's Wife, and Swanky Kong. The game was the first of the Donkey Kong series to include a "secret" world, as well.
Ports
Rare began porting the game to the short-lived Nintendo Virtual Boy, though the project was cancelled at an early stage. [1] (http://www.vr32.de/spiele/unreleased/donkey_kong/index.e.htm)
In 2004, a Game Boy Advance port was released. The game included new features such as mini-games, a new boss by the name of Kerozene, and the insertion of characters (Expresso the Ostrich, Candy Kong, and Tiny Kong) that didn't originally appear in the original.

DonkeyKong is the main protagonist in the DonkeyKong series (not to be confused with Cranky Kong, the main enemy in the original DonkeyKong game who is believed to be his grandfather).
DonkeyKong later appears at the end of the game, where he breaks free from the same tied ropes he was previously seen in and proceeds to uppercut K. Rool through the roof of his airship.
DonkeyKongCountry2 was highly praised by both critics and fans alike upon release, especially in the platform gaming community, and is generally still regarded as an excellent game today.
