Doppelganger is an evil, near-mindless duplicate of Spider-Man that was created by Magus during the battle known as the Infinity War. The six-armed creature was one of many doppelgängers created by Magus during this conflict. The Doppelganger possesses Spider-Man's strength, speed, wall-climbing abilities, and spider-sense, and also has six arms, claws, fangs, and the ability to produce its own razor-edged webbing. Although the Doppelganger was killed during the Infinity War by the Hobgoblin, he was mystically revived. When Magus was defeated by Adam Warlock at the conclusion of the Infinity War, all of the doppelgangers were destroyed except for the Spider-Doppelganger (and a double of Daredevil saved by another entity), thanks to Demogoblin's magic forming a psychic link between the Doppelganger and the Demogoblin. For a time, he was a 'pet' to Demogoblin, but the two went their separate ways after a battle with Spider-Man, Venom, and the Ghost Rider. Doppelganger later joined up with Carnage, Shriek, Carrion and Demogoblin during the infamous "Maximum Carnage" killing spree. In the process, Shriek became a sort of adopted mother to Doppelganger, making him even more dangerous as he followed Shriek's instructions in battle with Spider-Man. Later, when Carnage turned on Shriek, Doppelganger intervened and Carnage stabbed the Doppelganger and threw him off of a skyscraper. The Doppelganger presumably died from these wounds, and has not been seen since. Powers and abilities Superhuman strength, agility, stamina, reflexes, speed, and the ability to shoot razor-sharp webbing. It had hardened talons that could tear through human tissue and it could cling to walls like Spider-Man. The Spider-Doppelganger was stronger than Spider-Man; the exact limit of his strength unknown. It was noticeably unintelligent, seemingly limited to instinct similar to a dog or a cat, although it was capable of following instructions from its 'mother' Shriek. Its body was also somewhat malleable and could form different shapes, although this attribute was seen much less in the issues it appeared in just prior to its apparent death.
Fictional Charcter History The Doppleganger began life as a living fractal,a geometric pattern in the Dimension of Manifestations, able to assume the forms and attributes of any being, real or abstract. When a mysterious Magus set out to obtain the vast power of the Infinity Gauntlet,he contracted the ruling fractal,Prime Manifester Anthropomorpho,to transform a several young fractals into monsterous versions of Earth's super heroes;the Doppleganger was one such creation, based upon Spiderman. It and its brethen were sent to Earth to attack the heroes in the so-called Infinity War.The Doppleganger interrupted a fight between Spidey ana Hobgoblin, who impaled the creature upon a fence.Following the battle, the Doppleganger was retrieved by the demonic Demogoblin, who infused it with supernaturual energy, enabling it to remain in the Earth dimension following Magus' defeat.Demogoblin directed the Doppleganger in a grudge angainst Hobgoblin, whom the altruistic Spider-man protected. The foursome's fight brought to another battle where the supernatrual Ghost Rider (Dan Betch) and Blaze were fighting a group of demonic Deathspawn and Spidey's murderous nemesis Venom. Both Dopplganger and Demogobin were subsequently pulled underground by the Deathspawn, with two Deathspawn briefly taking up silent residence within the Doppleganger's body. The disoriented Doppelganger wnadered around New York for before being attacked by the psycotic Carnage, who mistook the creature as their mortal enemy,Spider-man.However, Carnage's companion, the equally insane Sreik took a liking to the Doppelganger, and the dearranged couple introduced their new "son" to the "pleasure" of random murder.During their spree, the three were joined by Demogoblin and Carrion(Malcom McBride);they also fought Spider-man,Black Cat,Cloak and Dagger,Venom,Morbius and others. The Doppelganger became devoted to Shreik;when Carnage attacked her for rebellious behavior, it sprang to her defense, but Carnag gutted it and kicked it to the street several stories below.Carnage and the others were defeated shortly afterwards, but whether the Doppelganger was truly slain remains to be seen.
