Dot's Traumatic Past In the past Dot had a difficult life due largely to her son Nick Cotton and often absent husband Charlie Cotton Charlie came and went from the square leaving her each time after betraying her since his arrival in 1986. In 1991 he died in a lorry accident off-screen away from Walford. Son Nick was equally bad. He had been involved in drugs, robberies and murder and always tried to cheat Dot out of her money. He even tried to poison her once for her Bingo money but backed out. He had murdered Eddie Royle in 1991 and was found not guilty after a trial in 1993. Nick's girlfriend Zoe turned up soon after and convinced Dot to move away with her,Nick and their son Ashley Cotton and she agreed. Dot returned to Walford in 1997 revealing Nick had been arrested for drugs possession and is in prison while Zoe and Ashley have moved away. Nick made his next appearance the following year in 1998 when he told possibly his biggest lie yet. HE HAD AIDS. He claimed he needed money to go to France where Ashley and Zoe have moved to. Dot believed him but a week later discovered Nick had been lying about his illness and was on the run from police. She grassed him up and he was taken away. Just When Dot thought she had seen the last of Nick he returned in November 2000 with son Ashley whom he had reunited with a month earlier in a special episode. His feud with Mark Fowler for getting him paralysed in January 2001 tragically caused the death of his son Ashley in June 2001 after he delibrately cut off the breaks off Mark's motorcyle. Ashley not knowing this got on the bike and died after crashing it into a wall. At Ashley's funeral Nick said Mark is the one who should be in the grave and not Ashley. Dot finally disowned him after he had unintentionally killed his son and threw him out from Walford soon after the funeral. Ashley was the only decent family she had in her life and Nick had also ruined Though Nick has not been seen again for four years there is always a possibility Nick will return once again causing Dot more heartache.
