A double degree, sometimes called a conjoint degree, joint, ordual degree, programme normally involves a student working for two university degrees in parallel. This might be with the same institution or at different institutions (sometimes in different countries). The two degrees might be in the same subject area (especially when the course is split between countries), or in two different subjects. Double-degree programmes can be a cost effective way to get exposure to two related fields.
Double degrees should not be confused with double honours degrees, nor with the occasional practice of awarding a further qualification with a worked-for (especially research) degree, nor with the awarding of a single degree by multiple institutions. Typically in a dual degree program both of the participating institutions reduce the amount of time required to be so spent at each institution. For example, a joint MBA / JD typically takes four years rather than the five years it would take to complete each program individually. Common joint degrees are MBA/JD degrees as well as MBA and JD degrees combined with MA's fields such as politics, economics, urban planning, internatinal relations. Many medical schools also offer joint MD degrees with JD and MBA programs as well as a range of MA programs. To earn two UW degrees, a student must complete 45 credits more than the number required for the degree that requires the fewer credits, regardless of whether the degrees are granted concurrently or at separate times, and regardless of the order in which the degrees are earned.
Degrees are awarded by colleges, not by the University, and two colleges cannot award a degree jointly unless formal arrangements have been made to offer a special degree program in that manner.
A student may complete a double major or doubledegree in which just one of the majors is honors, and may use the honors general education requirements for both.
