Doug Funnie is new to a fictional-town called Bluffington, after moving from another fictional-town, Bloatsburg with his family, Phil, an outgoing yet nerdish father who works as a photographer; Theda, Doug's meek-mannered mother; Judith, or Judy for short, Doug's artistic sister; and the family pet dog, Porkchop. Meanwhile, while sitting down at a counter and meeting several other kids, Doug notices a pretty girl running across the sidewalk. Distracted, however, he accidentally slips on a ketchup packet and squirts ketchup on the shoe of the school bully: Roger Klotz. Roger decides to humilate Doug after the incident and tells him if he wants to be a hero, he has to capture a mythical beast called a "nematoad," which is a very popular myth around Bluffington and is the town's mascot. When Doug goes to the local lake and tries to capture it, he discovers that it was just a hoax and feels embarrassed. When confronting Roger and his gang, a "brown creature" emerges from the water. Roger and his friends are scared, but Doug realizes it's Porkchop, covered in mud. Doug "captures" him and scares away Roger and his friends, who believe Porkchop is a real nematoad.
