Doug Padgett, born Douglas Ernest Vernon Padgett, on the 20th of July 1934, was one of the finest cricketers of his generation, playing in over 500 first class matches and representing England twice, in 1960.

Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, Doug started playing cricket at an early age and under the watchful eye of his elder brother of 14 years, Granville, also a professional cricketer, Doug showed a natural talent for cricket early in his life, and his talent was fulfilled when he became the youngest player ever to play first class cricket for Yorkshire aged just 16.

Doug, after his national service, during which he played for the combined services went on to cement his place in the Yorkshire first team, and the 1959 season was his most successful, accumulating over 2000 runs.

This was followed in 1960 by a call cup for England, and though he only played 2 Tests, he can count himself unlucky not to have played more.

After his retirement in 1971, Doug captained the second eleven and then became head coach of Yorkshire CCC. In this role for over 20 years, Doug has been credited with the discovery & expert coaching of some of the greatest cricketers of the modern era, including Michael Vaughan, Darren Gough and Matthew Hoggard.

Douglas Ernest Vernon Padgett, born 20 July 1934, was a cricketer who played more than 500 first-class matches and represented England in Tests twice, both in 1960.
After National Service, Padgett was one of the first of a new generation of Yorkshire batsmen to cement his place in the Yorkshire first team.
He was not a great success, and was one of a number of England players criticised in The Oval Test for slow batting in the second innings, though in his defence his place in the side was not secure and his 31 was his highest Test score.
