After two seasons of high school hockey Doug Zmolek moved to the University of Minnesota for three seasons and was a member of the United States team that competed in the 1990 World Junior Hockey Championships.
Zmolek was not an offensive threat on the blueline but he was able to move the puck out of his zone with quick, accurate passes, and possessed the soft hands required for quick passes in tight quarters.
Speed always seemed to be Zmolek's downfall and he was never able to consistently place higher than the fifth or sixth best defender on any NHL team that he played with.
