Dousman is a village located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,584.


Geography

Dousman is located at 43°0'53" North, 88°28'21" West (43.014801, -88.472564)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.3 km˛ (1.3 mi˛). 3.2 km˛ (1.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 3.91% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,584 people, 575 households, and 393 families residing in the village. The population density is 497.2/km˛ (1,284.2/mi˛). There are 587 housing units at an average density of 184.3/km˛ (475.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 96.59% White, 0.57% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 2.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 575 households out of which 39.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 15.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 24.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.11.


In the village the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $46,944, and the median income for a family is $53,409. Males have a median income of $40,677 versus $30,882 for females. The per capita income for the village is $21,722. 4.5% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.2% of those under the age of 18 and 2.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Dousman was born on Mackinac Island, Michigan, the son of Michael Dousman, a prominent fur trader on the island.
Dousman was very influential in bringing the railroad to Prairie du Chien by 1857, making the Milwaukee and Mississippi the first railroad to lay track all the way across Wisconsin.
Dousman is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Prairie du Chien.
