Dover Turret, also known as the Admiralty Pier Turret, is an 1882 enclosed armoured turret built on the western breakwater of Dover harbour, it contains 2 16", 80 ton guns, the biggest installed in Britain. Another example of very heavy armament of the period are the Tyne Turrets
Declared obsolete in 1902, it is currently part of the port and inaccessible, though the guns remain in place.
Maxton was once a rural parish to the west of Dover, and the terminus of the tramway system serving the town until its closure in 1938, and is now a suburb of the town.
Dover was the starting point of the Watling Street Roman road, and was an important harbour of the classis britannica (British fleet).
In 1216, Dover was attacked by the French and successfully defended by Hubert de Burgh.
