Dowell is a village located in Jackson County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 441.

Geography

Dowell is located at 37°56'22" North, 89°14'22" West (37.939545, -89.239553)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 441 people, 199 households, and 125 families residing in the village. The population density is 460.2/km² (1,188.0/mi²). There are 217 housing units at an average density of 226.4/km² (584.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.41% White, 0.23% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 199 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.75.

In the village the population is spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $24,750, and the median income for a family is $28,958. Males have a median income of $24,821 versus $16,719 for females. The per capita income for the village is $12,464. 13.3% of the population and 10.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.7% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
