Encyclopedia > Downley

Downley is a hamlet in the parish of West Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire, England. It is located high in the Chiltern Hills, overlooking the town of High Wycombe. Today it is almost indistinguishable from the urban sprawl of the latter town.


The place name is Anglo Saxon in origin and means 'field on the hill'.

It is the principal centre of population of Downley Parish Council [1] and is located high in the Chiltern Hills, overlooking the town of High Wycombe.
There is a variety of shops and services in the village, including two churches, a large primary school (The Downley School), a Scout and Guide centre, three newsagents and a number of takeaway restaurants.
Downley also has a war memorial hall, which is used as a central meeting place, and a millennium beacon placed on Commonside of Downley Common.

DOWNLEY Albion won the Wycombe & District League Cup for the third year in a row in a night of high drama at Wycombe Wanderers last Friday.
It was tough on Bucks CC who worked hard and created enough chances to win the game, but Downley deserved the win for the way they battled and after they hit the post twice in the first half.
Downley were first to go close when James Ramsey hit a screaming 20-yard free kick which pinged off the post.
