History

Downsyde's origins occurred when MC’s Optamus and Shahbaz (Dyna-mikes) were in Year 11 at Craigie Senior High School, were they took part in a school talent quest in 1996. "Originally it started out in the northern suburbs at Craigie high school. I was heavily into spray can and graffiti art and I used to MC at a lot of parties. This is when we were all around sixteen years old. We’d be in a group in the corner free-styling and from there it progressed onto doing a lot of small time promotion around the area. We’d hire out a soccer hall for whoever’s birthday it happened to be and bring down a stack of vinyl, we just started out doing these cool little suburb Hip Hop parties. Eventually we got hold of some keyboards and samplers and put out this tape demo called ‘Behind The Bucket’. We only did two hundred of them, took them into Central Station and Dada’s and they sold out in a couple of weeks! Considering no one really knew who we were at the time, we went from complete obscurity to realising there were people out there that were interested and wanted to buy our stuff."[1]

The group grew with the addition of a third MC, Dazastah, who they met at Leederville Tafe and DJ Armee on turntables. The group finally expanding to the cuurent fully-fledged instrumental entity, with percussionist Salvatore (Beaverloop) and Cheeky (Circus Murders) on keyboards, loops & samples joining the group. For seven years Downsyde produced beats and rhymes and played at hundreds of gigs, parties & MC battles culminating in the release in September, 2000 of their debut album, Eponimous, a release of recordings made by the band between 1996-2000. As an independent release the group did not receive much publicity from their debut album, nor from their first single, "Gifted Life", which was released two years later.
