Encyclopedia > Dragaera

Dragaera is the fictional universe in several series of novels by Steven Brust. It is a world roughly analogous to Earth, but in either a distant future or distant past that is undefined. Dragaera may also be a completely different planet altogether, or may not exist in Earth's universe. Steven Brust poses for a portrait for Wikipedia in 2006. ... Earth is the third planet from the Sun. ...

Magic of many forms exist on this planet, separated into sorcery and witchcraft. Sorcery relies on drawing upon an ancient artifact, a floating Orb worn by the emperor of the Dragaeran Empire. This Orb has direct power over amorphia, a substance of pure chaos found only on Dragaera. Only citizens of the Empire may use its power for sorcery, which tends to be destructive in nature. Witchcraft is practiced by primarily Easterners and relies on internal energy. Unlike sorcery, witchcraft can be preformed with a group, enhancing the power of the spell cast.
